American Institute of Biological Sciences

The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) is a nonprofit scientific association dedicated to advancing biological research and education. Founded in 1947 as a part of the National Academy of Sciences, AIBS became an independent, member-governed organization in the 1950s.[1] Today, with offices in Washington, DC, and Reston, VA, and a staff of approximately 50, AIBS is sustained by a robust membership of 200 professional societies and scientific organizations representing more than 250,000 individuals.
AIBS advances its mission through:
- Coalition activities in research, education [1], and public policy [2]
- Publishing the peer-reviewed journal BioScience [3]
- Providing scientific peer advisory and review services under contract (including GSA MOBIS) to government agencies and other clients through its SPARS division [4]
- Convening scientific conferences
- Managing scientific programs
- Maintaining a job postings site [5], in collaboration with BioOne [6], with traffic in excess of more than 340,000 users per month
In addition, AIBS manages the project office for the National Ecological Observatory Network [7], assists the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center [8] with education activities, and houses the national office of the Coalition on the Public Understanding of Science [9].
