Cichorioideae is a subfamily of the Asteraceae (sunflower family) of flowering plants. Familiar members of the group include lettuce and dandelions. The subfamily as understood in 1998 turned out to be paraphyletic,[1] so a number of tribes were moved to new subfamilies. The 2002 classification of Panero and Funk specifies the subfamily Cichorioideae to comprise the tribes Arctoteae, Vernonieae, Liabeae, Cichorieae, and Gundelleae.[2] The genus Platycarpha is incertae sedis within Cichorioideae[3]
