The Ornate Tinamou Nothoprocta ornata is a type of Tinamou commonly found in the high altitude grassland and dry shrubland in subtropical and tropical regions up to 3,450 to 4,700 m altitude. This species is native to central and south-east Peru, Bolivia, extreme northern Chile and western Argentina in South America.

Subspecies

The Ornate Tinamou has three subspecies as follows:

  • Nominate race (Nothoprocta ornata ornata) occurs in south-east Peru, extreme northern Chile and Bolivia
  • Nothoprocta ornata branickii occurs in central Peru
  • Nothoprocta ornata rostrata occurs in western Argentina

Taxonomic note

Kalinowski's Tinamou Nothoprocta kalinowskii is now considered a synonym of N. ornata.

Characteristics

The Ornate Tinamou is approximately 32 cm in length. Its upperparts are brownish-grey marked with black and buff, tawny-buff below and barred darker. Its head and neck buff prominently spotted with black, with bill slender and curved, legs either yellowish or greyish.
