Miscellany for deletion (MfD) is a place where Wikipedians decide what should be done with problematic pages in the namespaces outside of the main namespace (also called the "article namespace") which aren't covered by other specialized deletion discussion areas. Items sent here are usually discussed for five days; then are either deleted by an administrator or kept, based on community consensus (determined using the discussion as a guideline).

Contents

Introduction

The only currently-used namespaces in which pages are eligible for deletion here are:

  • Help:
  • Portal:
  • MediaWiki:
  • Wikipedia:
This includes WikiProjects, although it is usually preferable to either mark the Project as historical or change it to a task force of the parent Project, unless the Project is entirely undesirable.
  • User:
When a page in the User or User talk namespaces seems worthy of deletion, please explain your concerns using either a personal note or by adding "{{subst:Uw-userpage}} ~~~~" to their talk page. While this step is not required, it does assume good faith and civility; often the user is simply unaware of the guidelines, and the page can either be fixed or speedily deleted using {{db-userreq}}.
  • the various Talk: namespaces

The undeletion of pages deleted after having been discussed here, and debating whether discussions here have been properly closed, is the purview of Wikipedia:Deletion review, which operates in accordance with our undeletion policy.

Please familiarize yourself with the following policies

Prerequisites

Please bear in mind that:

  • Nominating a Wikipedia policy or guideline page, or one of the deletion discussion areas (or their sub-pages), for deletion will probably be considered disruptive, and the ensuing discussions closed early. This is not a forum for modifying or revoking policy.
  • Nominating for deletion a proposed policy or guideline page that is still under discussion is generally frowned upon. If you oppose a proposal, discuss it on the policy page's discussion page. Consider being bold and improving the proposal. Modify the proposal so that it gains consensus. Also note that even if a policy fails to gain consensus, it is often useful to retain it as a historical record, for the benefit of future editors.
  • User pages about Wikipedia-related matters by established users usually do not qualify for deletion.
  • Normal editing that doesn't require the use of any administrator tools, such as merging the page into another page or renaming it, can often resolve problems.
  • If a page is in the wrong namespace (e.g. an article in Wikipedia namespace), simply move it and tag the redirect for speedy deletion using {{db-reason}} using the reason: Redirect left after a cross-namespace move - G6 Housekeeping and notify the author of the original article of the cross-namespace move.

How to list pages for deletion

Please check the aforementioned list of deletion discussion areas to check that you are in the right area.

To list an article/page for deletion, follow this three-step process: (replace PageName with the name of the page, including its namespace, to be deleted)

I.
Edit PageName.

Enter the following text at the top of the page you are listing for deletion:

{{subst:mfd}}

or

{{subst:mfd|GroupName}}

if nominating several related pages in an umbrella nomination.

Be sure to include "subst:", not just {{mfd}}; this is easier on the servers. Please include "Nominated for deletion" or similar in the edit summary and don't mark it as a minor edit. Consider checking the "Watch this page" box to follow the page in your watchlist. This will help you to notice if your MfD tag is removed by a vandal. Save the page.

If you are nominating a userbox in userspace or similarly transcluded page, consider using {{subst:md1-inline|PageName}}.
II.
Create its MfD subpage.

You should see a prominent link to "this page's entry" in the new article text.
Follow that link (to [[Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName]) and enter this text:

{{subst:mfd2 | pg=PageName | text=Reason why the page should be deleted}} ~~~~

Put the page's name in place of "PageName" and include a reason after text=. Check the "Watch this page" box if you would like to follow the ongoing discussion in your watchlist. Save the page.

III.
Add a line to MfD.

Follow   this edit link   and add a line to the top of the list:

{{subst:mfd3| pg=PageName}}

Put the page's name in place of "PageName" and include the page's name in your edit summary. Save the page.

  • While not required, it is generally considered civil to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the miscellany that you are nominating. To find the main contributors, look in the page history or talk page of the miscellany. For your convenience, you may add {{subst:MFDWarning|Article}} ~~~~ to their talk page.
  • If you are nominating a Portal, please make a note of your nomination here.
  • If nominating a page that has been nominated before, consider placing {{priorxfd|pagename}} in the discussion area to link to the previous discussions.

Talk:Sarah Palin/sandbox

A little-watched POV fork of Sarah Palin - seems to be a place for people to add controversial information that's not included in the real article. If people want to develop the article offline, they can use their own sandbox and post the proposed edit at Talk:Sarah Palin. Kelly hi! 22:28, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Delete Does not belong in mainspace. Jclemens (talk) 02:01, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete Unnecessary sandbox page - POV fork or not, articles should not be sandboxed as a subpage of the main article's talkpage, but in a user's own userspace. ~ AmeIiorate U T C @ 07:44, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep. Both of the above are wrong. This is in talk space. Subpages of talk pages are definately appropriate. If it is "A little-watched POV fork", which is far from clear, then it could be protected, but not deleted. If it has been actually used, then deletion creates GFDL issues, if it has not been actually used, then there is no issue. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 12:02, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep. I put a note on the talk page about the sandbox before it was created. When the article is protected a sandbox is very handy. When the sandbox is not in use it can be blanked. See Talk:Sarah Palin#Sandbox for article improvements. By the way, Kelly has personal sandboxes. If Kelly thinks sandboxes are inappropriate then why does Kelly have sandboxes. QuackGuru 18:28, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete Why not just discuss changes to article on the talk page like everyone else. QG has a history of creating such pages, editing them to his liking, then edit-warring his changes into the articles.--Hughgr (talk) 18:50, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Nominating for deletion as Wikipedia is not a blog, webspace provider, social networking, or memorial site. User page is being used as a personal web page, although user has not edited since October 2007 and has not edited any articles using this account, this page is now being edited by various IPs. --Snigbrook (talk) 18:05, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Delete. One the one hand, this user's been on Wikipedia since early April, five full months, and has made no contributions other than to her userpage, except for one question (which was answered twice)on the reference desk asking for help posting her "professional artist bio" on wikipedia. On the other hand, even with other contributions this page wouldn't be acceptable. While there's lots of latitude for contributing editors to post personal information on their userpage, we do have to be careful not to allow ourselves to be used as a webhost. --HughCharlesParker (talk - contribs) 19:37, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Userpage masquerading as a bio, but it's entirely self-serving and the person is entirely non-notable. User in question has exactly one edit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nard the Bard (talkcontribs)

  • Keep -- I have some issues with this... The user's account was created Aug 31st and the user page created Sept 4th. Lets give the user a chance. It appears the IP address that has continually edited the page is very likely this user. How about adding a welcome message to the user's talk page (and perhaps to the IP talk page too). A 5 day old user does not deserve to be bitten like this. Yea it seems like it meets the critera of WP:NOT, but in this case, I think education is the best method.--Jordan 1972 (talk) 00:31, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep They only have one edit because the account is brand new. -- Ned Scott 03:11, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep for now. New editors should be welcomed. Some editors have busy lives, and we certainly doen't want to exclude such editors. Does not look like a bio for self promotion. Someone should contact the person to confirm that the user is really the person he claims to be. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 09:52, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

    • RtV doesn't include deleting your user talk page anyways. Deleting the talk page would essentially be the "fresh start" that RtV doesn't grant. There's no personal info there, so a blanking will suffice. --UsaSatsui (talk) 19:59, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Nintendo/Award

Barnstar that has not been awarded to anyone except its creator. It is part of the (soon to be task force) inactive Wikipedia:WikiProject Nintendo. MuZemike (talk) 13:29, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Note: This debate has been added to the list of video game related deletions. MuZemike (talk) 13:34, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Neutral for now: This award is transcluded on a couple user talk pages. So I'm a bit apprehensive about deleting it, but could be convinced to support deletion. The easiest solution that comes to mind is simply moving it to something like Template:Barnstar Nintendo. I don't know if that's the best solution though. (Guyinblack25 talk 15:06, 3 September 2008 (UTC))

Wikipedia:WikiProject Nintendo/Kirby

Inactive task force under an inactive WikiProject (Wikipedia:WikiProject Nintendo) that will itself shortly become a task force in itself. There is little or no content on this page in which may warrant keeping around. MuZemike (talk) 13:19, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Conditional delete: The task force page can be deleted after the talk page is archived similar to previously deleted/redirected inactive projects: MMO games archive, Neopets archive, Runescape archive.
This page began as a separate Project, but another MfD merged it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Nintendo as a task force. The history for the main page show edits that were mainly cosmetic/maintenance, about a third of which consist of inactive/deletion tagging and bot edits. The main page has no significant history worth keeping, but the talk page has some discussions about sourcing that is worth keeping. (Guyinblack25 talk 14:38, 3 September 2008 (UTC))
  • Y Done talk page archived. MuZemike (talk) 21:31, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

This userpage is only being used for advertising an organization. The page's creator has not edited any other pages. Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising. EnviroboyTalkCs 01:25, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Keep this is a brand new editor sandboxing an article. We should not be jumping on deletion the moment we see these kinds of pages, but rather go to the user talk page and try to help them. From there we can see if there is any reasonable potential for notability. -- Ned Scott 06:56, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep for now...the page is very spammy, but as Ned said, it seems it's being used as a sandbox and not as an advertisement. At the moment, anyways, it's too soon to tell. This is a good place to offer help, not slap on deletion tags (really, it's been less than a day) --UsaSatsui (talk) 06:59, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete on balance. I deleted it once as blatant advertising a few days ago & I think that is still my view. I also concur with the point the nominator makes that there are no other contributions, something that always makes me look rather carefully. --Herby talk thyme 14:32, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep It's only the 2nd day for this editor. The organization is possibly notable, so he should be helped to write an acceptable article, not hindered in it. DGG (talk) 18:22, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Blank. Is not suitable, but let's not overreact. Certainly no case for blocking. Advise user, from WP:NOT

If you are interested in using the wiki technology for a collaborative effort on something else, even if it is just a single page, there are many sites that provide wiki hosting (free or for money). You can also install wiki software on your server. See the Wiki Science wikibook for information on doing this. Scratchpad Wiki Labs also allows personal wikis. See also Wikipedia:Alternative outlets.

No, I don't think we are being too hasty here at all. I have just re-read the page. It is quite clear that this is an info page for a course that is being taught at the University of Florida. No reasonable way to interpret it as anything else. Nsk92 (talk) 01:51, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Comment I've been reading the AN thread as well as this one, and wonder if we could blank the pages then leave polite notices explaining more in depth what the project is about than our standard templates. Then, of course, delete if the material is returned. This may be a project intended to edit articles, etc. 6 months ago, or so, I reviewed a class projects article over at PR, and it was a vast improvement.
